Grant Objectives

In January, 2008 the District received some very good news from the CSDE about our after school grant proposal. We learned that our grant proposal- P.A.S.S.: Programs After School in Stafford- was awarded $150,000. There were only 36 winning grants out of almost 100 entries. Stafford was one of only 5 “first time awardees”.  As per grant guidelines, only 1 school in a district can apply for the grant. We selected Stafford Elementary School as the host school.

The purpose of the state grant is to promote achievement via after school programs. Our plan includes three primary focus points

  • Academic Support
  • Learning Enrichment
  • Wellness/Physical Fitness

Each activity offered in the program must have a strong educational connection (i.e., specific learning objective/concept which promotes literacy, numeracy, and/or science, healthy lifestyles, etc). The after school program must be made available to all students and average 12 hours per week of programming. There is a 3 hour minimum for each session.  As well, free bus transportation is provided for all participating students.

The daily schedule for the PASS program includes a homework club with academic support, a read and respond session to promote reading and writing skills, and learning enrichment activities related to curriculum skills, topics of interest to students, and/or wellness and physical fitness objectives.

The PASS program was designed to include 3 separate sessions.

  • Winter session (Feb- March): 16 meetings
  • April Vacation (3 days): 20 hours
  • Spring session (April- May): 20 meetings

A distinguishing feature of the grant proposal is parent involvement.
We committed to developing a PASS Council which includes parent representation to determine ideas for parent workshops relating to needs and concerns of the Stafford Elementary School community.
