ABOUT ME

Hello, I am Brett Duchon, Director of Choirs, Stage Door Players (Drama), and General Music Teacher here at Stafford Middle School..  To tell you a little bit about myself, I grew up in West Harrison, New York (just 20 miles North of New York City).  I attended the Harrison Public Schools and graduated from Harrison High School in 1990.  I then became a chef for the Marriott corporation for 6 years before beginning college.  While living in West Harrison, I was volunteer firefighter and served as Treasurer of the West Harrison Volunteer Fire Department from 1990-1995.   I then attended and graduated from Western Connecticut State University in January of 2000 with a Bachelor of Science in Music Education.

Before teaching in Stafford,  I taught instrumental music in Stamford, CT, General Music in Hartford, CT, and was an instructor with the 2006 and 2007 MAC Champion Trumbull High School Marching Band and Jazz Ensemble, Trumbull, CT.  For the past 20 years I have been a member of the Westchester Brassmen Drum and Bugle Corps from Harrison, NY where I serve as brass instructor, drum major, and music arranger.  I also was a member of the now disbanded American Legion Drum Corps of Greenwich, CT.   In 1994, I represented the Brassmen in the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade with the Drum Corps International (DCI) Drum and Bugle Corps All-Stars (this also included an appearance on  NBC's TODAY SHOW).  I am a professional trumpet player who performs regularly throughout the Fairfield County, CT and Westchester County, NY areas. I have performed and recorded with the musical talents of Arthur Lipner (jazz vibraphonist), the U.S. Navy Jazz Quartet, Chris Parker ( former drummer for the Saturday Night Live band), at Lincoln Center, and the BIG E.

I currently reside in Holyoke, Massachusetts with my wife AnnMarie and my cat, Lance.  Some of my hobbies include composing, reading, traveling, watching drum and bugle corps competitions, playing softball, community theatre, golf, football, and hockey.  I am a really BIG New York Yankees, Washington Redskins, New York Islanders, and Los Angeles Lakers fan.

In my seven years in Stafford, I have created and developed the Multi-Award Winning and Nationally Ranked SMS Stage and Select Choirs (2005 & 2007 Music Showcase Festival Grand Vocal Champions), was an assistant coach for the SMS Girls Softball team (2003).  I thoroughly enjoy working in this town and hope to continue as Music teacher and Choral Director for many years to come.  In May of 2007, I  earned my Master's Degree in Educational Technology at Lesley University, Cambridge, Mass.

GENERAL MUSIC - At SMS students experience various aspects of music.  Throughout the students 3 year course of study students will learn about: music notation (reading and writing), musical instrument families and the instruments, music from Non-Western Cultures (Japan, India, Africa and others), ScaleWorks, Rhythm readers, performance on instruments, creation of their own instruments, Broadway musicals, Opera, Ballet, Musical theater, music history, Jazz history, music analysis, music theory, and much much more.

Some new and interesting plans are underway in the General Music and Choral classrooms.  In an effort to boost our already elevated CMT scores. students will work on classroom assignments and a variety of musical concepts that will help to reinforce the materials that students need to master the CMT's.  Students use a variety of mathmatical techniques when learning music notation, we further use scientific methods when assessing different pitches.  Chorus students are learning to comprehend the lyrics to their music and express / relate those lyrics to their vocal performance. This will aid in relating on a more intimate level with the text and have an even better understanding of the music.
