Cooking Preparation

Students work in groups to learn how to plan, prepare and cook different dishes.   Students make a breakfast sandwich, the most important meal of the day and a healthy lunch.  Students host a Parent/Guest Luncheon of Tacos, Sunshine Cupcakes and Ice Tea at the end of the term.

Nutrition and Wellness

Students study nutrition, the science of food and its importance in overall health and well-being.  A healthy diet is needed to grow, for energy, to repair cells and prevent diseases.  Students will identify the six nutrients and review the Food Pyramid.  In small groups, students create a mobile of an assigned nutrient.

Kitchen  and Food Safety

     Students learn kitchen safety while preparing   various meals.  When cooking their breakfast sandwich, students use most of the electrical appliances in the kitchens; the oven, the range and the microwave.  When preparing for the luncheon, students practice food safety; cooking, cutting, storing and serving.  Students also do all necessary clean-up and get practice in creating a meal from
start to finish.
