CULTURAL LITERACY ORAL AND WRITTEN RESEARCH PAPERS
Choose a topic from the list of cultural literacy entries that we
have done for this quarter. This list is stapled on the side board. Do
this early enough to make sure there's enough information on your
topic. There will be four research papers throughout the year - one at
the end of each quarter. No one in any of my classes can do the
same report. This is another reason to sign up early. You have
to choose a topic within the quarter we are presently in. For example,
during first quarter, you have to pick a topic that falls between weeks
one through eight.
You have to put your completed paper in the website turnitin.com.
This site checks your report for plagairism within 24 hours of your
submitting it. If any part of your report comes back as plagarized, you
will receive a zero. To avoid this, you must put an MLA citation at the
end of every quotation and every paragraph that comes from the same
source. This information is not coming from your head - you have to
tell where you got it. That’s done by using MLA citations and having a
Works Cited page.
You have to have at least two different sources for your report.
One can be an encyclopedia, and the other should be from a magazine,
another book, newspaper article, Internet, etc.
When you read the sources of your information, DO NOT COPY THEM
EXACTLY WITHOUT GIVING CREDIT. You must use quotation marks around
exact quotes. When putting information in your own words, a technique
to use so you won't plagiarize is to read the copy, then close the book
or article, and write it in your own words. This forces you to isolate
the ideas and not copy word for word. You still have to say where you
got the info, but it will be in your own words.
Do not cut and paste information from the Internet. This will be
picked up in turnitin.com as plagarism and no credit will be given for
the report.
YOU MUST DO MLA CORRECTLY IN YOUR REPORT OR YOU WILL RECEIVE A
ZERO
. I do this so that you will realize the importance of MLA here
at SHS and in your future college. If you have any questions about the
documentation, please ask!
When you hand in the written portion of your research, you must
include photocopies of all the information that you used to get your
information. This includes the title page and copyright page of
the book and the exact pages of the information. The
photocopies must clearly show the page numbers from the book.
When using info from the Internet, use the page numbers that are
generated by the computer in the parentheses within your paper. You must
highlight or circle the EXACT information you used. You cannot hand in
the book instead of a photocopy. These pages should be stapled to the
back of your report. Your paper will not be corrected without
these sheets.
You have to write at least a seven paragraph paper (introduction,
five middle paragraphs, conclusion) about your topic. Remember - one
idea per paragraph and each paragraph must be at least five sentences
in length.
These expanded topics will be shared with the rest of the class
as oral reports. Each oral has got to be at least three minutes long.
Pictures or other props are useful to use during your speech. There is
an attached sheet that shows what you will be graded on during your
oral.
For your oral, do not give the birth date of the person in the
introduction or the death date
in the conclusion. Note cards must be used and they should be in note
form - not complete
sentences. Be sure to make eye contact during your speech.
The
average of the oral and written grades will count as a test grade at
the end of the marking period.
Attached to these rules is also the assessment sheet that you
have to fill out and staple to
the very end of your report.
IN COLLEGE, PLAGIARISM IS PUNISHED BY EXPULSION.
DON'T PLAGIARIZE!
