All textbooks and vocabulary books must be covered within one week of the beginning of the course. Covering books really helps to prolong the life of a book. When discarding garbage, white paper goes in the white can and everything else goes in the blue can.
2.
You should have a special folder for any dittoed sheets handed out during the course. You will have a final exam that will cover all the material we go over, so all handouts are important to keep.
3.
You can be quizzed on homework or class work at any time. Quizzes do not have to be announced.
4.
Quizzes are divided into different categories - literature, vocabulary, cultural literacy, etc. The average of each category counts 10% of the quarter grade, except for the literature quizzes. These quizzes count 20% of the quartyer grade.
5.
Homework must be done on time. Late homework will not be accepted. Incomplete homework will also receive a zero. All homework counts 10% of the quarter grade.
6.
When you get a syllabus (dates when chapters are due) for a book, you are responsible for the chapters on the dates indicated. Being absent the day before a certain chapter is due does not excuse you from the assignment. You are also expected to have done the homework that was due while you were out. Not having your book at home is not an acceptable excuse for not doing the homework. Always take your book home.
7.
All homework (except for vocabulary and SAT exercises), tests, and quizzes must be answered in complete sentences. Incomplete sentences will receive a zero.
8.
The composition grading policy is applied to all essays, letters, journals, compare/contrasts, etc., that are do outside of class. Please review the packet of information that covers this policy. MLA documentation must be done correctly on all assignments. Every period, colon, parenthesis, etc., must be in the right place. You've learned it - now use it correctly! (I'll answer any questions you have to ensure you don't lose points on MLA or any other aspect of a paper.)
9.
All outside writing assignments have to be typed (except questions on books, vocab., etc.). If you don't have a computer at home, there are many in school that are available for your use.
10.
Whenever you are absent, you are responsible for making up the missed work. All missed assignments, quizzes, tests, etc., must be made up immediately, or you will receive a zero. Any homework assignments that were due must be turned in the day you return to school.
11.
All papers handed in must have the proper heading on the top left hand corner. For typed papers, you must also have your last name and the page number in the upper right hand corner of the page. Separate sheets will be given that explain how to do these two procedures.
12.
If you are either tardy or dismissed and miss English class, you MUST turn in any work that is due after you get here or before you leave. Failure to do this will result in a zero for the work. This includes homework, book reports, essays, journals, etc. If you missed a test or quiz because you were either tardy or dismissed, you must come to see me during that day and make arrangements to make up the work immediately!
13.
You must bring all necessary folders, books, homework, vocabulary books (on Fridays), pens, etc., to class. No one may go to a locker or leave class at all during the period. Please do not ask to be an exception to this rule.
14.
In all classes, a vocabulary quiz will be given every Friday. In order to receive credit for the vocabulary quiz, the missed words must be written out with their definitions by the next quiz. When a rewrite is not handed in, the quiz will receive a zero.
15.
I strongly urge you to get a calendar and put on it all the due dates that you have received at the beginning of this course. Keep it up-to-date and visible in your room at home, and you shouldn't miss any assignments.
16.
Please learn to accept responsibility for your actions. If you make a mistake, don't blame someone else for it - take the blame yourself. I never want to hear, "It's not my fault!"
17.
If you are found cheating at any time during the year, a note will be sent home to your parents and a copy of this letter put in your permanent folder. DO NOT CHEAT!!
18.
When you have an assignment due that had to be done on the computer, I will NEVER accept the excuses that the printer wasn’t working, the disk couldn’t be read, my work disappeared on the computer, etc. Give yourself enough time to solve these problems before the day the assignment is due. Also all papers will have to be turned in to turnitin.com. This is a site on the Internet that scans the whole net for plagiarism in the paper. How to do this will be explained separately.
19.
I will never give extra credit work for any reason. I certainly give you enough regular work that extra credit is not necessary if you have been keeping up.
20.
When disposing of paper, put white paper in the white trash can and everything else in the blue one.

One of my pet peeves is when students start to pack up their bookbags before the end of the period. This really is very rude and shouldn’t be done in any class. Especially, don’t do it in this room.
