3. INTRODUCTION
You should have an introduction to the report that comments on the author.
4. FACTS ABOUT THE AUTHOR'S LIFE
This section should include facts about the author's life such as where he/she was born, educated, early life, etc. Also consider people or events in history that influenced your author or other external forces that may have caused your author to choose the topics he/she did. Most authors are considered the pulse of the age in which they lived so more than likely there was some external force that provoked your author to write. It is in your best interest to research these possibilities and discover why your author chose his/her particular topics to write about.
5. AUTHOR'S STYLE
You should analyze your author's use of diction, syntax, imagery, and tone and how these elements contribute to the author’s overall style. You need examples (that are not used in the listing) to support what you’re saying. You also must list ten examples of elements of meaning, ten examples of elements of sound, and ten examples of elements of sentence structure that you found within your author's books. Number these in the paper (1-10, etc.). In the listing, you have to underline and explain the figure of speech. Use MLA notations for these. Remember you must put the author and an abbreviation of the book title in the parentheses (Twain, Huck 14) because there is more than one book by this author in the "Works Cited" section.
6. REPEATED THEMES
While reading the author's works, repeated themes in all the books you read should be considered and noted. In this section of the paper, you have to discuss two separate repeated themes in depth. Use examples from the books to support what you are saying about the themes. You should explain how you see these themes as being a reflection of the author's outlook on life.
7. CRITICS ON THE AUTHOR
You MUST read one article written by a critic on your author. This can be located in books, magazines, newspapers, or periodicals. This article must pertain to the books you have read. Don't get an article that you really don't understand. Find one that you do. You must photocopy the article and include it with your term paper. You will get no credit for this section if this is not done. You also have to read the article actively. This means notes on the photocopied sheet. Discuss the article SEPARATELY by summarizing it entirely in two to four paragraphs. In separate paragraphs (and make it very obvious that this is where your opinion begins) either agree or disagree with the critic. You must support your reasons for agreement or disagreement! Do not use first person.
8. THESIS DEVELOPED
This is the most important section of the entire paper and should be treated accordingly! In this section you will express your own opinion on some aspect of your author. As you are reading the works of your author, you should be jotting down things that interest, disturb, inspire, or anger you. As you prepare your book reports, you should be considering and forming some sort of thesis statement about your author's works. Do not repeat the ideas from the theme section in your essay. These have to remain two distinct sections. It will be much easier on you if you formulate a thesis as soon as possible. Then you can jot down ideas and statements that support your thesis. All of this information along with your own ideas form an essay that should be between 4 - 8 pages in length.
9. CONCLUSION
You must wrap up your paper with a conclusion that summarizes some of the findings of the paper.
10.DOCUMENTATION
As with all your other papers in high school, you must use MLA documentation to cite your sources. Make sure all your entries are exactly correct in the Works Cited and within the paper itself. Also, you can have no more than two sources from the Internet and these must be legitimate cites. You cannot put an entry in the Works Cited if you haven’t used it in your paper.
11. TURNITIN.COM
You must submit your first and final draft to turnitin.com. You will be given separate directions on how to do this.
ALL OF THE ABOVE SECTIONS MUST BE ARRANGED IN THE ORDER THAT THEY APPEAR HERE. EVERY ASPECT OF EACH SECTION MUST BE COMPLETED, AS STATED, IN ORDER TO RECEIVE FULL CREDIT. THE ROUGH DRAFT AND FINAL DRAFT MUST BE TYPED, MUST BE AT LEAST FIFTEEN PAGES IN LENGTH (EXCLUDING THE "WORKS CITED" SECTION), AND MUST BE DOUBLE-SPACED WITH ONE INCH MARGINS ON ALL SIDES. YOU MUST MAKE A PHOTOCOPY OF THE PAPER AND BOTH MUST BE TURNED IN ALONG WITH YOUR FIRST DRAFT AND NOTE AND WORKS CITED CARDS ON THE DUE DATE. ANY SECTION OF THE PAPER THAT IS NOT HANDED IN ON THE DUE DATE WILL RECEIVE A ZERO. EVEN IF YOU ARE ABSENT ON THAT DAY, YOU MUST GET YOUR PAPER IN TO THE TEACHER.

OVERALL CONSIDERATIONS FOR THE PAPER
1. You need a title for each of the separate sections.
2. You need introductions and conclusions for each of the separate sections. These can be part of the first and last paragraphs for that section.
3. Make sure your opinion in the critic section is clearly distinguishable from the summary of the article. The article should have the title and author's name within the text of what you are saying.
4. You need transitions between the paragraphs in the essay.
5. The middle paragraphs in your essay should always refer back to your thesis (what you are defending).
6. In "Works Cited" section, when an author is the same as in the previous notation, put only three dashes and a period.
7. When quotes are used in the paper, they have to be part of sentences. They can’t stand by themselves as sentences. Quotes of five lines or more are indented ten spaces, use no quotation marks, and have the period at the end of the quote – not after the parenthesis. They are also double-spaced.
8. All books listed in the Works Cited have to be used in parentheses somewhere in your paper.
9. When doing MLA citations in your paper, if the author’s name and book are mentioned in the sentence, you don’t have to put them in the parentheses – only the page number.
10. When putting the publishers in the Works Cited, they have to be abbreviated. The correct abbreviations are included in this packet.
11. Also included is a listing of possible thesis statements for the essay section. Look over these to get ideas.
12. When putting the publishers in the Works Cited entry, they have to be abbreviated. An explanation of this is included in later in this packet.
