GEOMETRY
MRS. GLETTENBERG
Welcome to Geometry! This handout will provide you information on:
·
Course Overview
·
Classroom Policies
·
My Expectations Of You As A Student
·
What You Should Expect From Me As Your Teacher
·
Grading Rationale
·
Missed Work Policy
I will ask you and your parent/guardian to sign indicating that
you have read and agree to the terms in this handout.
The
beginning of our year in Geometry will serve as a transition from Algebra to
Geometry. We will use two textbooks during
the year: Math Connections 1B will
be our book at the beginning of the year and following midterm exams we will
switch to Math Connections 2A. We
will cover the following topics this year:
1B
Chapter 6: How Functions Function
1B
Chapter 7: Counting Beyond 1, 2, 3
1B
Chapter 8: Introduction to
Probability: What Are the Chances?
2A
Chapter 1: The Building Blocks of
Geometry: Making and Measuring Polygons
2A
Chapter 2: Similarity and Scaling: Growing and Shrinking Carefully
2A
Chapter 3: Introduction to
Trigonometry: Tangles with Angles
In
addition, as many of you will be taking the CAPT exam this year, we will devote
time to review and preparation for that exam.
All school policies as outlined in your
student handbook will be in effect in our classroom. In addition:
You will:
·
Come to class on time and prepared
·
Show respect to others – this includes
your teacher, your fellow students, and any visitors to the classroom
·
Listen when someone is speaking – they
may have the same question you do
·
Raise your hand to be called on
·
Be dismissed by the teacher, not by
the bell
You will not:
·
Arrive late to class without a pass
·
Leave the classroom without permission
·
Bring or consume food or drinks in the
classroom – this is a safety issue
Students are expected to come to class
prepared and ready to work. Coming to
class prepared means that you will have the following materials with you
every day unless you have been told differently:
·
A 3-ring binder (I suggest a 1 ˝”
binder organized as outlined on the next page)
·
Your covered textbook
·
A writing instrument
·
A calculator (a TI-83 is recommended;
we have a limited number available in class but these cannot leave the
classroom)
·
Completed homework or other
assignments on their due dates
Your 3-ring binder should be divided into the
following 5 sections:
·
General Information (this handout will
go in that section)
·
Class notes
·
Homework
·
Tests and Quizzes
·
Journal
Classroom expectations work both ways. In order for us to have a successful year, it
is as important that I meet your expectations as it is that you meet mine. To that end, I will:
·
Come to class prepared to teach each
day, with clear objectives for the day’s lesson
·
Allow sufficient time in class for
questions
·
Be available for extra help, either
before or after school or during free periods
·
Return tests, quizzes, or other
assignments the next school day whenever possible
·
Maintain a positive classroom
environment
GRADING RATIONALE
Your grade for this class will be based on
the following:
|
Tests and Quizzes |
50% |
|
Homework |
20% |
|
Journal |
10% |
|
Notebook/Binder |
10% |
|
Class Participation |
10% |
|
|
|
·
Tests will always be announced in advance. Quizzes may or may not be
announced. Occasionally you will have
notebook quizzes, so keeping your notebooks complete is critical.
·
Homework will be checked daily but not necessarily collected and is graded
on a 5-point scale. For every three (3)
missed homework assignments, students will be issued a ˝ hour detention.
·
Journals will offer you the chance to reflect on topics we have covered
throughout the year. Some reflections
will be on assigned topics; others will be more “free choice.” Journals will be collected and graded –
grades will be based on completion of all journal assignments and not on
specific content as these are personal reflections. I will provide you with a notebook to use as
your journal this year.
·
Notebooks (binders) will be checked at least twice each quarter for
completeness. In order to receive
full credit, you must have your binder organized as instructed above.
·
Class participation is not just how often you volunteer to answer questions – this
grade will also be based on your work in group settings, your willingness to
work through topics you may find difficult, and how much effort you put forth
in class.
·
All assignments, including homework and tests/quizzes, are posted on my
faculty web page. If you are absent
from class, it is your responsibility to determine what assignments you have
missed.
·
If you are absent on the day before an
announced test or quiz, you will be expected to take the test or
quiz as scheduled.
·
If are absent on the day of
a quiz or test that has been announced in advance, you will be responsible for
making that quiz or test up within one week of your return to school or you
will receive a 0.
·
If you are out of class
for a substantial amount of time and have missed a significant amount of material
to be covered on a test or quiz, I will work with you to schedule a make
up.
I hope this handout has given you an idea of what to expect during this school year. I am looking forward to working with you and to a great year!
