COLLEGE ENGLISH 10

College English 10 provides a look at World Literature.  Common to all tenth graders are a study of Shakespeare's Julius Caesar (Ancient Rome), John Steinbeck's The Pearl (Mexico),  The Contender (Harlem), and short stories from authors around the world.  We will also be studying  Animal Farm, (Russia), and The Once and Future King  (England).  Grammar and Writing are also a focus for 10th grade in preparation for CAPT testing each spring.

Third Quarter:  CAPT preparation and Julius Caesar

British English 12

Topics  include Shakespeare and Macbeth; The Chocolate War, Beowulf, Grendel, The Canterbury Tales, British poetry,
The Hound of the Baskervilles, and One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich.  A book report, college application essay, and a research project will also be completed during this first semester course.

Individualized Reading

This student directed, project based course allows indivual choice of reading materials.  Daily journal writing and four creative projects make up the rest of this course.

Women in Literature

We will be exploring many genres of writing, including all elements of the short story, as well as plays and novels.  We may also look at poetry as time allows.  All works will either be written by, or focus on, women.  Silent reading will begin each class period.  The work you read will, of course, be written by a woman!
