Rules and Grading Policy

Grading:
Students are graded in the following manner

1) Home work/Class work-----30%
2) Quizzes/Test-----30%
3) Writing/Project-----30%
4) Independent Reading/Journals----10%

Expectations:

1) Vocabulary: Students are responsible for completing vocabulary assignments on a weekly basis. They are given a vocabulary quiz on Friday.

2) Late/Missed  Work:  I do not accept late work. The assignments must be turned in when they are due. If  a student is absent they are responsible for retrieving and completing any missed work. If the student fails to do so in a timely manner they receive a zero for the missed assignments.

3) Preparation: Students are expected to come prepared to class. This means that they need a notebook, the text we are currently reading, and a writing utensil.
Coming to class unprepared results in a detention.

4) Independent Reading: At the start of every class we do 10 minutes of silent reading. Each student is expected to come to class with their reading book. Through out the quarter they will complete several small assignments for this book. Additionally there will be a larger "book project" at  the the end of the quarter.

5) Homework: In addition to the vocabulary homework students are expected to do a good deal of reading at home. When I assign reading for homework, I often give a pop quiz the next day in class. If a student fails to do the assigned reading they will be unprepared for the class discussion/activities . They will also probably fail the quiz. To make matters  worse,  I often  give a writing assignment after we have discussed a story or novel. Failure to do the reading will make it difficult to complete the writing assignment. As you can see it is very important for students to complete the reading assignments as they are given.
