SHS Profile


Each year the SHS guidance department develops a profile of the graduating class that is forwarded to colleges and other interested persons. This brochure outlines the offerings at the high school and a history of the post-secondary plans of the year's graduates.  A hard copy of this pamphlet may be obtained in guidance, but is included below for your information.

Stafford High School is a four year, public, comprehensive high school accredited by the New England Association of Secondary Schools.  It strives to provide students with a basic body of knowledge, skills, and understandings in order to permit them to function in a democratic society.

The teacher pupil ratio for the 2006-07 school year was 1 to 15.  Eighty percent of the faculty has earned a master’s degree, certificate of advanced graduate study, or doctorate. The average years of service of the staff is 15.

   
CURRICULUM

SHS offers a core curriculum in English, mathematics, science and social studies which is supplemented by elective courses in foreign language, music, art, business, technology and consumer science.  In total, students are offered a range of over 150 course options from which to choose their program. To graduate from Stafford High School, students must pass 22 credits including :

·   4 credits of English
·   3 credits of social studies (1 in World   History and 1 in U.S. History, ½ Civics)
·   3 credits of mathematics
·   3 credits of science (1 in physical science and 1 in biology)
·   2 credits in physical education
·   1 credit in the arts or vocational education
·   ½ credit in health
·   ½ credit  in PC Applications

GRADING SYSTEM

Numerical grades, based on a 100 point scale, are used to record student progress.  An average of 90, with no grade below a 77, is considered high honors; an average of 85, with no grade below 77, is considered honors.  The passing grade in all courses is a 60.
 

CLASS RANK

Bi-annually, based on their grades, students within each class are ranked.  Each course at the high school is weighted to reflect its difficulty, and a system of five levels (I-V), with level five being considered the most difficult, is used to compute the rank.  All courses, with the exception of independent study, are included in this computation.
 

TECHNOLOGY

Stafford High School offers students state-of-the-art technology.  Although the high school is preently undergoing renovation, students have a variety of sites for computer usage and may utilize computers with Internet access, CD ROM resources, computerized drafting and tech ed facilities. With the completion of renovations, students will have access to an up-to-date media, center with state of the art technoglogy available.
 
 
INSTRUCTIONAL TIME

SHS operates on a 181 day calendar and students attend school for 6 1/2 hours per day.  Instruction is delivered in 46 minute periods, with students receiving 1,002 hours of instruction yearly.
