Is TLC?
Teaching
for Literacy Competence is a program for children who are at risk of reading
failure and are being taught to read on a one to one basis.
Staffordville’s
TLC program is designed to:

Work
with struggling beginning readers to prevent reading failure

Have
the child recognize him/herself as a reader
-
Provide
daily one to one instruction utilizing individualized plans (45 minute
lessons for each child).

Use
writing as a component to teach reading
-
Alternate
between reading teacher and trained paraprofessional working with child
-
Provide
take home program to increase student’s progress
-
Child
is progressively challenged to read more difficult books and guided to
become accountable for his/her own reading by using the strategies of meaning,
grammar, and phonics.

To
move the child from beginning reading status to one where he/she has developed
their own self-improving system for reading.
