Volunteers:   We are always looking for volunteers for in-school activities  and take home projects.
Please let me know if you can help us any time during the year.  You may choose to volunteer weekly or on special occasions such as field trips.  If you are interested in volunteering, you will need to fill out a volunteer application form and read the volunteer policy in the Staffordville School Office.

Responsive Classroom:  Our classroom rules are created collaboratively between students and teachers during the first week of school.  We follow the Responsive Classroom model.  There is a specific set of social skills that children need to learn and practice in order to be successful academically and socially:  CARES = Cooperation, Assertion, Responsibility, Empathy, and Self-Control.

Homework:   District guidelines for homework outlined 15-20 minutes per week for first graders.  Homework is important for several reasons.  First, it provides opportunities for taught skills.  Second, it gives parents a chance to see how children are faring.  Third, it establishes necessary work habits that students will need throughout their academic careers.
Students are currently receiving homework from their small group reading teachers. This work is directly linked to our Houghton Mifflin Reading Program. Typically it will include things related to sight words, phonics skills, and reading comprehension as these are the things students are tested on weekly.  This homework will go home in a red folder. Instructions for the completion and return for this homework will be included in the folder.  Students may also get homework from three homeroom teacher .  This will go home in the clear envelopes with separate instructions for the completion and return.  At this time of year it is especially important for student to practice their sight words. You may also hear these words called high frequency words. These are the most common words seen in print that in many cases cannot be sounded out. Students just need to recognize them on sight in order to read fluently.
