Homework

District guidelines for homework outline 15 - 20 minutes per week for first graders.  Homework is important for several reasons.  First, it provides opportunities for students to practice taught skills.  Second, it gives parents a chance to see how their children are fairing.  Third, it establishes necessary work habits that students will need throughout their academic careers.

Students are currently receiving homework from their Small Group Reading teachers.  This work is directly linked to our Houghton Mifflin Reading program.  Typically it will include things related to sight words, phonics skills, and reading comprehension as these are the things students are tested on weekly.  This homework will go home in a RED folder.  Instructions for the completion and return of this homework will be in the folder.  Students may also get homework from their homeroom teacher.  This will go home in the CLEAR envelopes with separate instructions for completion and return.

At this time of the year it is especially important for students to practice their SIGHT WORDS.  You may also hear these words referred to as HIGH FREQUENCY WORDS.  These are the most common words seen in print that in many cases cannot be sounded out - students just need to recognize them ON SIGHT in order to be able to read fluently.
