How to Open an Attachment and Save It As a File

When you receive an e-mail message with a file attachment, the attachment will appear at the end of the message and will be highlighted in blue. In the picture below, the file attachment is named First Grade Assessment.mdb.

Click on the name of the file attachment to save it as your own file. When you click on it, an "Unknown File Type" box may appear, as in the picture below.

If this box appears, click on the "Save File" button.  If the "Unknown File Type" box does not appear, you should instead see a box that says "Warning: There is a possible security hazard here."  A picture of this box appears below.

If this box appears, simply select the bullet in front of the words "Save to disk" and click on the "OK" button.

At this point,  a "Save As" box should appear.  In the picture above, the file name in the "Save As" box is highlighted.  You should rename the file with a name that makes sense to you.  In the picture below, the file has been renamed "Kyer 2002-2003" because it is a student database.

You must now select the location where this file will be saved.  In the picture above, the location in the "Save in" box says "Desktop".  If you click on the down arrow at the end of this box, a drop-down menu will appear with other locations.  In the picture below, the teacher directory has been selected.  If your teacher folder appears in this menu, you may select it instead.

If it has not yet been selected, you must now double-click on your teacher folder, as in the picture below.

Once your teacher folder has been selected and the file has been renamed, you may click on the "Save" button.  The file has now been saved.
